Theoriginofthe"U.S.NewsandWorldReport"universityrankingscanbetracedbackto1870.TheannualreportoftheFederalBureauofEducationranksuniversitiesbasedonthedataitholds.Theuniversityrankingswithmodernsignificancewerepublishedin1983by"U.S.NewsandWorldReport."Theoriginalintentofuniversityrankingsistoevaluatethequalityofcollegesanduniversitiesandtodemonstratetheinfluenceofcollegesanduniversities.

UniversityRankings

U.S.NewsandWorldReport'srankingsofAmericanuniversitiesandtheirdepartments(Colleges)aredividedintosixcategories:

  • NationalUniversityRankings(NationalUniversities),thatis,thebestuniversityrankingsintheUnitedStates.Universitiesunderthistypeofrankingprovidesufficientbachelor'sdegree,master'sdegree,anddoctoraldegreeforstudentstostudy.

  • TheLiberalArtsCollegesranking(LiberalArtsColleges),whichistherankingofthebestliberalartscollegesintheUnitedStatesAtleasthalfofthedegreeisadegreeinLiberalArts.

  • RegionalUniversitiesRanking (RegionalUniversities)

  • RegionalCollegesRanking (RegionalColleges)

  • BusinessProgramsRanking (BusinessPrograms)

  • EngineeringProgramsRanking (EngineeringPrograms)

IntherankingsofU.S.NewsandWorldReport,Tier1isthebestuniversity,andTier4isthemoreordinaryuniversity.UniversitieswithlowerscoresthanGrade4oruniversitiesthatareunwillingtoaccepttheU.S.NewsandWorldReportrankingsareclassifiedasunranked.

Amongthem,thenationalandliberalartscollegesarerankeduniformlyacrosstheUnitedStates,whilethemasterorbachelorlevelisdividedintofourindependentrankingsinthesouthern,northern,centralandwesternregions(thereforeeachhasfourseparaterankings)."First").

Inthepast,theTierdivisionwasaboutevery50grades(ieTier1was1-50,Tier2was51-100,etc.),amongwhichthefirst25werecalledstar-rateduniversities.LaterTier1andTier2aremergedandcollectivelyreferredtoasTopTier,andtheirnumberisalsoapproximatelyaroundnumberandisnolongernecessarily50Tier.
