OnApril18,1906,theQinggovernmentofficiallyestablishedthefirstformalnormalschoolinChongqing—theofficialSichuanEastNormalSchool.
In1914,theEasternSichuanNormalSchooljointlyestablishedby36countiesinEasternSichuanwasrenamed"EasternSichuanUnionCountyNormalSchool".
In1916,theschoolwasoccupiedbythearmyduetothewintervacationlastyear.Inthespringofthatyear,theschoolwasforcedtorenttheGuanyinLiangChuanbangofficeandnearbyhouses,andmovedbacktoitsoriginallocationintheautumnofthesameyear.
Intheautumnof1917,theschoolwascompletelyoccupiedbythearmy,soithadtobemovedtoBaxianConfucianTemple(HongxueStreet,nowHongxueLane,JiefangEastRoad,YuzhongDistrict).
In1920,thegarrisonwaswithdrawnfromtheschoolandtheschoolmovedbacktoitsoriginalsiteagain.
In1928,theEasternSichuanUnionCountyNormalSchoolwasonthevergeofbankruptcy.The21stArmyCommanderLiuXiangdecidedtoclosetheschoolduetothefinancialdifficultiesofEastSichuanNormalSchoolandthecomplicatedsituationofteachersandstudents,soheappointedGanJiyong,whohadjusttakenoverfromEastSichuanDaoYin,totheschooltohandletheclosingmatters.However,itwasstronglyopposedbytheschool’steachersandstudentsandallsectorsofsociety.Theprincipal,GanJiyong,heldamaintenancemeetingtodiscusstheissueofschoolretentionandabolition.Themeetingresolvedtheissueandtheschoolcontinuedtohandleit.ThemaintenancecommitteewasreorganizedastheschoolboardandDaoYinwasthechairman.Inthesameyear,theschoolmottowasputforward:"IncludingHongguangUniversity,CarryingForwardthePast."
In1930,GanJiyongsoldtheoldschoolsitethatwasnolongerapplicable,andboughtmorethan7,000abbots’landtobuildanewschoolbuildinginShimagang(nowtheChongqingWorkingPeople’sCulturalPalace)outsideTongyuanmen.Whentheoldschoolsitewassoldandthenewschoolbuildinghadnotbeenbuilt,theschooltemporarilyrentedtheformersiteoftheZengjiaYanbaCountyAgriculturalHighSchoolandLongquanguanastemporaryschoolbuildingsinthespringof1930.Attheendof1930,Zengjiayanmovedtothenewsite.
In1931,EasternSichuanNormalUniversitywasrenamed"EasternSichuanUnionCountyHigherNormalSchool"andatwo-yearhighernormalschoolwasadded.InJanuaryofthesameyear,theSichuanProvincialDepartmentofEducationforwardedtheorderoftheMinistryofEducation,andtheEasternSichuanUnionCountyNormalSchoolwasorderedtochangeitsnameto"EastSichuanGongliNormalSchool".

Intheautumnof1932,EastSichuanGongliNormalSchoolopenedaruralteachertrainingcourseandacentralagriculturalexperimentfieldoncampus.
Inthespringof1933,CiqikouDizangTempleandothercivilianfieldswereleasedformorethan700acresasanewschoolsiteandexperimentalfarm.Then,morethan800acresofofficiallandinFenghuangshanwerepurchasedandtheexperimentalfarmwasformallyestablished.InFebruary,theRuralTeacherTrainingDepartmentofGongliNormalSchoolinEastSichuanmovedtothenewsiteofCiqikou.InJuly,theSichuanProvincialGovernmentallocated40,000yuantochangetheruralteachertrainingcoursetotheSichuanRuralConstructionCollege,whichwasseparatedfromtheEastSichuanNormalSchoolandbecameanindependenthighereducationinstitution.InAugust,SichuanRuralConstructionCollegewasformallyestablishedandbegantoenrollundergraduatestudents.BoththedeanandthefielddirectorwereGanJiyong.
Fromtheendof1934tothebeginningof1935,theEastSichuanJointNormalSchoolwasrenamed"EastSichuanJointNormalSchool".
InAugust1936,theSichuanProvincialDepartmentofEducationchangedtheSichuanRuralConstructionCollegetothe"SichuanProvincialInstituteofEducation"andhiredGaoXianjian,whowastransferredin1935,asthedean.Therewere2departmentsintotal,namelyruralDepartmentofEducationandAgriculturalEducation.
DuringtheWarofResistanceAgainstJapan,theJapanesearmybombedChongqing.InMay1939,theschoolmovedtoTuoguBay,Donghaituo,BaishaTown,Jiangjin.
InAugust1940,EastSichuanUnionNormalSchoolwasrenamed"SichuanEastSichuanNormalSchool".
InMay1946,theschoolmovedbacktotheoriginalsiteofShimagangfromDonghaituoKofunBay,BaishaTown,Jiangjin.
From1947to1949,theDepartmentofSichuanEducationbecamestable.Therewere9departments,namelytheDepartmentofEducation,theDepartmentofChineseLiterature,theDepartmentofEnglish,theDepartmentofHistoryandGeography,theDepartmentofMathematics,andtheDepartmentofNaturalHistory,DepartmentofAgronomy,DepartmentofAgriculturalSystems,DepartmentofHorticulture.
OnOctober12,1950,withtheapprovaloftheMinistryofEducationoftheCentralPeople’sGovernment,theSichuanProvincialInstituteofEducation(FacultyofTeachers6)mergedwiththeNationalWomen’sNormalCollegefoundedin1940toformtheSouthwestNormalCollege.Afterthemergerofthetwoschools,mostofthefaculty,staffandfamilymembersoftheWomen'sNormalCollegemovedfromtheformersiteofHuangjuepingJiaotongUniversitytoCiqikouYuanchuanTeachingInstitute.TheSouthwesternMinistryofCultureandEducationconsideredthattheYuanchuanEducationInstituteinCiqikouwasrelativelynarrowandwasnotconducivetofuturedevelopment,soitallocated1,200acresoflandoppositeChongqingUniversityinShapingbaandallocated16billionyuan(oldcurrency)asthefirstphaseoftheschool’sfunding.Constructnewteachingbuildingsanddormitories,andrelocatethenewlyassembledfacultyandstaffofSouthwestNormalUniversityfromCiqikoutothenewschoolbuildinginShapingba.
In1952,intheprocessofadjustmentoffacultiesanddepartmentsacrossthecountry,theyweremergedintoSouthwestNormalUniversity:SichuanUniversity,DepartmentofEducation,DepartmentofEducation,DepartmentofChinese,DepartmentofHistoryandGeography;DepartmentofChinese,ChongqingUniversity,DepartmentofForeignLanguages;DepartmentofMathematics,Biology,DepartmentofForeignLanguages,andDepartmentofMusicofWestChinaUniversity;DepartmentofEducationalAdministration,DepartmentofChineseLanguageandLiterature,DepartmentofBiochemistry,EastSichuanEducationCollege;andsometeachersandstudentsofSouthwestTechnicalCollegeandLeshanTechnicalCollege.October26.Inaddition,accordingtothedecisionoftheSouthwestBureauoftheCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaandtheSouthwestMilitaryandPoliticalCommittee,theformeradministrativeofficeoftheEasternSichuanPeople’sGovernmentinBeibeiandtheresidentoftheEasternSichuanDistrictPartyCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinawillbeusedasthenewcampusoftheSouthwestNormalUniversity.Beibei.Therefore,thefamiliesofteachers,studentsandstaffofSouthwestNormalUniversitymovedfromCiqikouandShapingbatothenewsiteofTianshengqiaoinBeibei,whichisnowtheNorthDistrictofSouthwestUniversity.TheoriginalschoolsiteofShapingbaandallthehousefurnitureleftbehindweretransferredtoChongqingCivilEngineeringCollege(laterChongqingJianzhuUniversity,nowChongqingUniversityDistrictB)foruse,andtheoriginalsiteofCiqikouwastransferredtotheFacultyTrainingDepartmentofSouthwestHighSchoolforuse.
InAugust1953,whenthehighernormalcollegesanduniversitiesinthesouthwestregionadjustedtheirdepartmentsagain,theDepartmentofMathematicsandPhysicsofSichuanNormalUniversity,theDepartmentofSchoolEducation,ChineseLanguage,andHistoryandGeographyofGuiyangNormalUniversity,DepartmentofPhysics,DepartmentofChemistry,someteachersandstudentsoftheDepartmentofHistoryandGeography,DepartmentofPhysics,DepartmentofChemistry,BiologyofKunmingNormalUniversity,andtheNutritionandConservationGroupofSichuanMedicalCollegeweremergedintoWesternTeachers.InOctober,theDepartmentofEarthSciencesofSichuanUniversityAtotalof222teachersandstudentsweremergedintotheWesternTeachers'College.
In1970,accordingtotheinstructionsoftheMilitaryCommissionandtheOfficeofthePrimeMinister,theDepartmentofAtomicEngineeringof"HarbinMilitaryIndustry"mergedwithsomemajorsof"HarbinInstituteofTechnology"andmovedwestwardtoChongqingtoformChongqingUniversityofTechnologyandstationedinSouthwestNormalUniversity.SouthwestNormalUniversitymovedtoamiddleschoolinLiangping.
In1973,SouthwestNormalUniversitymovedbacktotheoriginalsiteofBeibei.
In1978,theschoolwasdirectlyundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofEducation.
In1985,SouthwestNormalUniversitywasrenamedSouthwestNormalUniversity.
In1999,theschoolwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationaluniversitystudentculturalqualityeducationbases.
In2000,ChongqingLightIndustryWorkersCollegewasmergedintoSouthwestNormalUniversity.

In1950,theSichuanProvincialInstituteofEducation(3rdDepartmentofAgriculturalSciences)mergedwiththeprivateXianghuiCollegeofArtsandLaws(AgriculturalRelationsDepartment)foundedin1946andtheprivateWestChinaUnionUniversity(AgronomyDepartment)foundedin1910FormedasSouthwestAgriculturalCollege.TheSouthwestMinistryofCultureandEducationdeterminedthelocationoftheprivateXianghuiCollegeofArtsandLawinBeibei(XiabaofBeibei,theformersiteofFudanUniversitymovedtoChongqing)asthesiteoftheWestAgriculturalSchool.
In1952,intheprocessofadjustingthedepartmentsofthecountry,thereweresuccessivelytheDepartmentofHorticulture,Sericulture,AgriculturalEconomics,PlantDiseasesandPests,andAgriculturalChemistryofSichuanUniversity;DepartmentofHorticultureandSericultureofYunnanUniversity;GuizhouUniversityDepartmentofAgriculturalChemistry,DepartmentofAgriculturalEconomics,DepartmentofPlantDiseasesandPests;DepartmentofRelatedAgriculturalDepartmentofChongqingUniversity,DepartmentofAgriculturalEconomicsofNorthSichuanUniversity,DepartmentofSericultureofLeshanTechnicalCollege,HorticultureDepartment,DepartmentofAgronomy,andAnimalHusbandryDepartmentofXichangTechnicalCollegeweremergedintotheschool.SinceXiabaisanalluvialplain,ithasbeeninundatedbyfloodsfromtheJialingRivermanytimesinhistory.Forthelong-termdevelopmentoftheschool,theschoolestablishedaschoolsiteselectionteaminthesameyear.ThenewsitewasoriginallyselectedatShapingba,behindtoday’sNankaiMiddleSchool,ChongqingNormalUniversityandTheoriginalChongqingCollegeofArchitecture(nowDistrictCofChongqingUniversity)andTanjiagangTown.Aftertheschoolsitewasselected,theDepartmentofArchitectureofChongqingUniversitywascommissionedtomakesurveyplanningforthenewsite.However,becausetheCollegeofAgricultureneededalargenumberofexperimentalfields,andShapingbawasalreadymainlyplannedforurbanconstructionatthattime,theplanningplanwasimmediatelyunsuccessful.Intheend,theBeibeiAgriculturalTestingField,locatedinthenaturalbridgeofBeibei,wasdeterminedasthenewschoolsite.
In1954,thenewcampusofSouthwestAgriculturalCollegewascompletedduringthesummervacation.XinongmovedfromBeibeiXiabatoBeibeiTianshengqiaonewcampustoruntheschool,whichisnowthesoutherndistrictofSouthwestUniversity.
In1979,approvedbytheStateCouncil,theschoolbecameanationalkeyuniversitydirectlyundertheleadershipoftheMinistryofAgriculture.
In1981,approvedbytheStateCouncil,theschoolbecamethefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry.
In1985,SouthwestAgriculturalCollegewasrenamedSouthwestAgriculturalUniversity.

截至2021年1月，西南大学与重庆、四川、云南、贵州、江苏、山东等省市73个地、市、县建立了校地战略合作关系，与国内54家大中型企业建立了紧密的产学研合作关系，与21个省、市800余个行政事业单位和900多家企业开展了有效的项目合作，取得了显著的经济效益和社会效益。其中与重庆市石柱土家族自治县的县校合作，受到广泛好评，被誉为产学研有效结合的"石柱模式"，入选全国高校产学研合作十大优秀案例。学校与美、加、泰、日、韩、越、澳、俄等近40个国家和地区的180余所高校、科研机构建立了长期友好合作关系，在泰国、加拿大、哈萨克斯坦合作建立孔子学院3所，建有1个中外合作办学非独立法人机构，6个中外合作办学本科项目。2019年，西南大学与美国密苏里州立大学合作举办植物科学与技术专业本科教育项目。

校徽
根据《西南大学章程》规定：学校校徽包括徽志和徽章。
（注：20世纪50年代初，郭沫若分别为西南大学的前身“西南师范学院”和“西南农学院”题写了校名，合并后中文校名沿用该字体。）
徽志释义：
徽志是圆套圆形徽标，中间是校徽主体，为“西南大学”四个字的小篆体组成一口象形大钟。钟的下方是阿拉伯数字“1906”，代表西南大学开始办学时间。外环上方是中文校名（郭沫若字体），下方是“西南大学”的英文大写。
钟通常放置于高处，且声音洪亮，能传千里之遥，在中国传统文化中钟的形象有很高的地位，这与西南大学在中国教育界的地位一致。寓意西南大学的教育理念如黄钟大吕，醒世育人，振聋发聩，发人深省。
图案古韵高雅，厚重凝练，简洁大气，有强烈的形式美感和视觉传播力，充分展现了西南大学的大学精神和办学特色，预示着西南大学的前途如晨钟浩荡，影响深远。
徽章释义：
徽章为教职工和学生佩戴的题有校名的长方形证章。教职工为红底黄字，本科生为白底黄字，研究生为蓝底白字。

学校校旗为长方形，主色为白底蓝字，长宽比例为3:2。校旗中央印有中文校名（郭沫若字体）和英文校名。
精神文化
校训
“含弘光大、继往开来”
校训的内涵：“含弘光大、继往开来”的校训，是1928年时任川东师范学校校长的甘绩镛先生所题。川东师范学校源于西南大学最早的办学渊源川东师范学堂。“含弘光大”，语出《周易》第二章《坤》：“坤厚载物，德合无疆。含弘光大，品物咸亨”。所谓“坤”者，明高僧智旭曰：“顺也，在天为阴，在地为柔，在人为仁，在性为寂，在修为止……顺则所行无逆……”所谓“含弘光大”，含是无所不包，弘是无所不有，光是无所不着，大是无所不被；“继往开来”，语出宋朝朱熹《朱子全书·周子书》：“所以继往圣，开来学，而大有功于斯世也。”继：继承；开：开辟。继承前人的事业，开辟未来的道路。“含弘光大，继往开来”，即是“包含弘厚，光着盛大，承前启后，开拓创新”之意。
“含弘光大，继往开来”作为校训，除含义厚重，寓义深远外，还来源于百年老校的历史沉淀，可谓有源之水，有本之木。而不是那种仁者见仁、智者见智、既可以编选出来，又容易变更的文字。对学校而言，要“包含弘厚，光着盛大，继承百年老校优良办学传统，开创西南大学的光辉未来”；对学校各级管理人员而言，要“高瞻远瞩，胸襟弘大，秉承百年办学理念，发扬优良传统，肩负发展学校重任，实现学校规划目标”；对教师而言，要“学高身正，为人师表，承前启后，开拓创新”；对学生而言，要“自强不息，学无止境，诚信做人，承前创新”。

大学精神的内涵：西南大学，生于西南，立于西南，杏坛育人，劝课农桑，百年耕耘，含弘光大；恰逢西部开发，与时俱进，继往开来。作为国家“211”工程建设综合大学，以“西南”冠之，顺天应时，顺地应民。因此，西南大学乃取西南之独特资源构筑核心竞争力，以其所学、所研、所育反哺于西南，服务于民生，融世界发展潮流。“特立西南，学行天下”，即是西南大学百年办学孕育的独特大学精神的高度凝练和彰显。
