AfterthefoundingofNewChina,inordertomeettheneedsoflarge-scalesocialistconstruction,in1952,thecentralgovernmentInaccordancewiththepolicyof"focusingontrainingindustrialconstructiontalentsandteachers,developingspecializedcolleges,andrectifyingandstrengtheningcomprehensiveuniversities",adjustmentstoschoolsanddepartmentswillbecarriedoutnationwide.TheGeologyDepartmentofPekingUniversity,theDepartmentofGeologyofTsinghuaUniversity,theDepartmentofGeologyandEngineeringofTianjinUniversity(formerlyBeiyangUniversity),theGeologyGroupoftheMiningDepartmentofTangshanRailwayInstitute(nowSouthwestJiaotongUniversity),andtheDepartmentofGeologyofNorthwestUniversitymergedtoformthepredecessorofChinaUniversityofGeosciences-BeijingSchoolofGeology.
OnNovember1,1952,thefirstopeningceremonyoftheBeijingInstituteofGeologywasheldontheroadsoftheDuanwangMansioninBeijing.LiSiguang,afamousChinesegeologistandministeroftheDepartmentofGeology,saidinhisspeech:"NowNewChinahasstartedTheBeijingInstituteofAeronauticsandGeosciencesistheearth-shakingcause,andtheBeijingInstituteofGeologyistheearth-shaking.Youaretheearth-movingwarriors...Youarethenewfather-in-lawandmother-in-lawoftheearth.IcongratulateyouonbehalfoftheMinistryofGeology."Hopetomakestudentsmoreenthusiasticaboutgeologicalcareer.TheschoolhasdecidedthatNovember7willbethe"SchoolDay"oftheBeijingInstituteofGeology.
OnMay17,1957,ComradeLiuShaoqimetwithrepresentativesofgraduatesofthecollegeinZhongnanhaiandhadacordialconversationformorethanthreehours.Hesaid:Geologistsare"guerrillasduringtheconstructionperiod."Tobuild,theymustengageingeologicalexplorationand"guerrillas."Youaretheguerrillas,scouts,andvanguardsduringtheconstructionperiod.
In1960,theschoolwasnamed"BeijingCulturalandEducationalFrontRedFlagCollege"andrankedamongthe64nationalkeyuniversitiesestablishedbytheStateCouncil.
InAugust1968,theCentralCommitteeoftheCommunistPartyofChinaandtheStateCouncilissuedthe"NoticeonSendingPropagandaTeamstoSchools."OnAugust25,theworkersandthePeople’sLiberationArmypropagandateamstationedintheBeijingInstituteofGeology,tookoveralltheworkoftheschool,carriedoutlarge-scalecriticism,largecoalitions,establishedrevolutionarycommittees,clearedclassteams,andrectifiedtheso-called"fighting,criticizing,andreforming".Intellectualswereseverelydestroyed,causingmanyunjust,falseandwrongcases.
SinceNovember15,1969,morethanathousandfacultymembershavebeensenttothe"May7th"CadreSchoolofJiangxiXiajiangRenheCommunetoreceive"re-education"withtheirfamilies,supportingtheelderlyandtheyoung.
Inthefiveyearsfrom1966to1970,theschoolstoppedenrollingstudents.Theperverseactionsofthe"GangofFour"causedacatastrophetothecauseofhighereducation.
In1970,13oftheoriginal46collegesanduniversitiesinBeijingwereforcedtorelocate.Amongthem,thegeologyandmining,agricultureandforestrycollegeswerethemainones,andtheschoolwasoneoftheinjuredschools,makingtheschoolevenworse.
Sincethen,theschoolhasenteredastateofturbulenceanddisplacement.Inthehastyrelocation,theequipment,booksandmaterials,specimens,teachingdocuments,etc.sufferedheavylosses.Thefacultyandstafflostastableplacetosettledown,andthebeautifulcampuswaserodedandoccupied.
In1970,therewasageneraltrendofschoolrelocation.TheschoolsentpersonneltoShaanxi,Jiangxi,Gansu,Hunan,Hubeiandotherplacestoinvestigatesiteselection.
InMay1970,therepresentativeoftheStateGeologicalAdministrationapprovedtherelocationoftheBeijingInstituteofGeologytoShimenCounty,HunanProvince.Inviewofthehastydecision,onSeptember18,theStateGeologicalAdministration's"ApprovalontheRelocationofBeijingInstituteofGeologytotheCapitalConstructionofJiangling,Hubei"agreedtochangetheschoolplantobemovedtoJianglingCounty,HubeiProvince.TheschoolwasrenamedHubeiInstituteofGeology.
In1975,thewholemovedtoWuhan,thecapitalofHubeiProvince,andwasrenamedWuhanInstituteofGeology.
In1978,WuhanInstituteofGeologyestablishedtheBeijingGraduateSchoolofWuhanInstituteofGeologyontheoriginalsiteofBeijing.
InNovember1981,approvedbytheStateCouncil,theschoolbecamethefirstbatchofdoctoralandmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry.
Inthespringof1986,theStateCouncilapprovedtheschooltoestablishagraduateschoolonatrialbasis(onMarch28,1996,theStateEducationCommissionapprovedtheschooltoformallyestablishagraduateschool).
In1987,theStateEducationCommissionapprovedtheWuhanInstituteofGeologytoberenamedChinaUniversityofGeosciences.TheschoolwasruninWuhanandBeijing,withitsheadquartersinWuhan.
OnDecember6,1997,theStatePlanningCommissionagreedtotheChinaUniversityofGeosciences"ApprovaloftheFeasibilityStudyReportonthe"211Project"ConstructionProjectofChinaUniversityofGeosciences"inthedocumentNo.[1997]246loftheStatePlanningCommission.The211Project"constructionprojectwasformallyapproved,anditsconstructionplanwasdetermined.
InFebruary2000,theschoolwasplacedunderthemanagementoftheMinistryofEducationbytheMinistryofLandandResources,andtheschoolenteredthesequenceofhighereducationdirectlyundertheMinistryofEducation.
InMarch2005,theuniversityheadquarterswasabolished,andWuhanandBeijingwererunningschoolsindependently.
InOctober2006,theMinistryofEducationandtheMinistryofLandandResourcessignedanagreementtojointlybuildChinaUniversityofGeosciences.Inthesameyear,the"InnovationPlatformforSuperiorSubjects"declaredbytheschoolwasapprovedbytheMinistryofEducationandtheMinistryofFinance,andChinaUniversityofGeosciencesformallybecamepartoftheconstructionoftheNational"985ProjectSuperiorSubjectInnovationPlatform".
InSeptember2011,hewasselectedasthesecondbatchofuniversitiesfortheEducationandTrainingProgramofOutstandingEngineersbytheMinistryofEducation.
In2016,theOceanSchoolofChinaUniversityofGeosciences(Wuhan)wasofficiallyinaugurated.
InSeptember2017,ChinaUniversityofGeoscienceswasselectedasoneofthefirstbatchofworld-classdisciplineconstructionuniversitiesinthecountry.
OnJuly11,2018,WuhanPsychologicalHospitalaffiliatedtoChinaUniversityofGeoscienceswasestablished.OnSeptember29,theChongqingMunicipalPeople'sGovernmentandChinaUniversityofGeosciences(Wuhan)andother6universitiessignedastrategiccooperationagreement.
InFebruary2019,theschoolwasrecognizedbytheMinistryofEducationasthefirstbatchofhighschoolscientificandtechnologicalachievementstransformationandtechnologytransferbases.InJuly,thefirstbatchwasselectedintothePlanetaryScienceAllianceofChineseUniversities.InAugust,itwasappraisedbytheMinistryofEducationasatypicaluniversitywithexperienceininnovationandentrepreneurshipinthecountry.
OnApril2,2020,ChinaUniversityofGeosciences(Wuhan),asoneoftheinitiators,formallyestablishedtheInternationalUniversitiesClimateAlliance(InternationalUniversitiesClimateAlliance)togetherwith40famousuniversitiesathomeandabroad,includingtheUniversityofNewSouthWalesinAustralia.ClimateAlliance).OnSeptember30,becameamemberofthe"ResourcesandEnvironmentPovertyAlleviationAlliance"ofuniversities.InOctober,itwasdesignatedbytheStateIntellectualPropertyOfficeandtheMinistryofEducationasthe2020NationalIntellectualPropertyPilotUniversity.InNovember,itwasidentifiedasthesecondbatchofpilotunitsfortheconstructionofeducationalfinancialmedia.InNovember2020,itwasnamedthesecondNationalCivilizedCampus.

The"973"projectandtopichostedbyChinaUniversityofGeosciences(Wuhan),the"863"project,theNationalNaturalScienceFoundationofChinaTherearemorethan600national-levelprojectssuchastheNationalSocialScienceFundProject,andscientificresearchfundinghasgrownsteadily.AcademicianYinHongfu’sscientificandtechnologicalachievementstodeterminetheglobalPermian-Triassicboundarylayertype"GoldenNail"(internationalstandard)wereawardedthe"TopTenProgressesinBasicResearchinChinain2001"andthe"TopTenScientificandTechnologicalUniversitiesinChinain2001""Progress"and"2001China'sTopTenScienceandTechnologyNews"awards.
Theteachersandstudentsoftheschoolhavepublished4papersand1ScienceintheinternationaljournalNatureasthefirstauthors.Inthepastfiveyears,theschoolhaswon50scientificandtechnologicalawardsatorabovetheprovincialandministeriallevel,including4specialprizesfornationalscientificandtechnologicalprogress,1secondprizefornationalnaturalsciences,and4secondprizesfornationalscientificandtechnologicalprogress.TheChineseversionof"EarthScience"sponsoredbytheschoolwasincludedintheinternationallyrenownedretrievalsystemEI,theEnglishversionwasincludedintheinternationallyrenownedretrievalsystemSCIE,andthejournal(SocialScienceEdition)wasincludedinthe"OverviewofChineseCoreJournals"andCSSCI.
Scientificresearchhasalwaysbeenorientedtowardsthemainbattlefieldofnationaleconomicconstruction,servingeconomicandsocialdevelopment,activelyparticipatinginthebreakthroughstrategicactionofprospecting,leadingthedevelopmentofindustryscienceandtechnology,andtrainingandtransportingtechnicalbackboneandmanagementtalents.AstheonlyuniversityparticipatedintheChineseContinentalScientificDrillingProject,theschoolhascompletequalificationsforscientificresearchandproductionofmilitaryprojects,establishedtwopre-researchsub-centersofthe“MinistryofEducationJointResearchCenterforDeepSpaceExploration”,andparticipatedinthedataprocessinganddataprocessingofthe“Chang'eProject”Forlunarapplicationresearch,theself-developedMAPGISsoftwarehasbeensuccessfullyappliedtothe"Shenzhou"seriesofmannedspaceflightsearchandrescueoperations.Theschooladherestothedevelopmentofindustry-university-researchcooperationandpromotestheconstructionofacollaborativeinnovationsystem.AftertheWenchuanearthquakein2008,theschoolpromptlyorganizedateamofscientificandtechnologicaldisasterreliefexpertstorushtothedisasterareatoprovidetechnicalsupportforthepreventionofsecondarydisasters,post-disasterreconstructionandurbansiteselection.

TheShawMuseumofChinaUniversityofGeosciences(Wuhan)wasformerlytheMuseumoftheBeijingInstituteofGeology.ItwasrebuiltinWuhanin1982.In2001,ChinaUniversityofGeoscienceswasfundedbytheRunRunShawFoundationtoconstructanewmuseumbuilding.Thenewmuseumhasatotalinvestmentofmorethan50millionyuan.Itwascompletedin2003andofficiallyopenedtothepublicinApril2005.Thenewlybuiltmuseumhasaconstructionareaofnearly10,000squaremetersandanexhibitionareaofnearly5,000squaremeters.ItisthelargestnaturalsciencemuseuminthefivecentralandsouthernprovincesandthelargestmuseuminmainlandChina.InNovember2006,itwasapprovedasa4A-levelscenictouristareabytheNationalTourismAdministration,makingChinaUniversityofGeosciences(Wuhan)auniversitywithanational4A-leveltouristattraction.TheYifuMuseumofChinaUniversityofGeosciences(Wuhan)hasacollectionofmorethan30,000geologicalspecimens,amongwhichnearly3,000arerareandrarecollections,includingadinosaurfossiltreasurewithabodylengthof10.5metersandabodyheightof6.1meters-HeilongjiangManzhousaurusfossil;Andthecompletenessoftheichthyosaurfossilkingintheworld-LiangGuanlingichthyosaurfossil;theworld'slargestcrinolinefossilwithanareaof15squaremeters,etc.
TheDidiTunnel
TheDidiTunnelconnectsthewestandnorthareasofthecampus.Itisastraightlinewithatotallengthof333meters,aclearheightof4.5meters,andaholewidthof6meters.Withaninvestmentofmorethan6millionyuan,thetunnelstartedconstructioninJune2003andwascompletedthatyear.校区内建隧道的高校,地大还属第一个,此工程极大地方便了师生来往南北校区,因为西区北区之间往来不用再绕行南望山。地大隧道是地大的标志性建筑,也是一条实用型通道。夏天的隧道,由于没有阳光直射,里头特别阴凉。
化石林
化石林始建于2002春季,占地1500平方米,由70多株产于辽宁、新疆、内蒙古等地的硅木化石组成。
