After1984,inaccordancewiththeUSgovernment'sagreementtospinoffAT&T,BellcorewassplitfromBellLabs.BellcoreprovidesunifiedresearchanddevelopmentservicesforaseriesofsmallBellcompaniesafterthespin-off.

In1996,BellLabsandAT&T'sequipmentmanufacturingdepartmentseparatedfromAT&TandbecameLucentTechnologies.AT&Tretainedasmallnumberofresearcherstobecomeitsresearchinstitution-AT&TLabs.
