ScientificResearchAchievements

  • ResearchSummary

WuJianxionghasmadeoutstandingcontributionstothedevelopmentofmodernphysicsintheworld.DuringherPh.D.,sheparticipatedinthe"ManhattanProject"thatproducedtheatomicbomb,andsolvedthemajorproblemthatthechainreactioncouldnotcontinue.Themotheroftheatomicbomb".Shealsoverifiedthewell-known"paritynon-conservationunderweakinteraction"and"thelawofconservationofvectorflowinβdecay",andsuccessivelywonhonors,degreesandawardsfromgovernmentsandworld-renowneduniversities,becomingveritable"TheQueenofPhysicsoftheWorld".

  • ScientificContributions

1992,KuangYamingandWuMeetingwithJianxiong(9photos)

1.In1957,thebetadecayexperimentprovedthenon-conservationofparityinweakinteractions.

Before1956,WuJianxiongwasalreadywell-knowntothenuclearphysicscommunityforhisdetailedandvariedexperimentalworkonbetadecay.In1956,afterLiZhengdaoandYangZhenningproposedthattheparitymightnotbeconservedduringthebetadecayprocess,WuJianxiongimmediatelyledherteamtoconductanexperimentinwhichthecobalt-60nucleusspindirectionwasdirectedbyastrongmagneticfieldataverylowtemperature(0.01K).Polarization(evenifthespinsarealmostallinthesamedirection),andobservetheexitdirectionofelectronsemittedbytheβdecayofthecobalt-60nucleus.Theyfoundthattheexitdirectionofmostelectronsisoppositetothespindirectionofthecobalt-60nucleus.Inotherwords,thespindirectionofthecobalt-60nucleusandtheexitdirectionofitsbetadecayelectronsformaleft-handedspiralinsteadofaright-handedspiral.Butifparityisconserved,itmustbesymmetrical,andthetwoopportunitiesforleft-handedspiralsareequal.Therefore,thisexperimentalresultconfirmsthenon-conservationofparityinweakinteractions.Asaresult,ithashadanextremelyfar-reachinginfluenceinthefieldofphysics.

2.In1963,experimentsprovedtheconservationofnuclearβdecayinvectorflow

WuJianxiong’sseriesofexperimentalworkonβchanges,especiallyThelawofconservationofvectorflowinnuclearbetadecayprovedin1963wasthefirsttimeinthehistoryofphysicsthatelectromagneticinteractionsandweakinteractionsweredeterminedexperimentally,andplayedanimportantroleinthelatertopicoftheunifiedtheoryofelectroweakness.

3.Othercontributionsinthestudyofbetadecay

Thestudyofbetadecayisofgreatsignificancetothedevelopmentofnuclearphysicsandparticlephysics.WuJianxionghasbeenengagedinresearchinthisspecializedfieldformanyyearsandisrecognizedasanauthorityinthisarea.Itconfirmedthesourceeffectoftheβspectrumshape,clarifiedsomeerrorsintheearlyβdecaytheory,andsupportedtheFermitheory.Thevarioustransitionsofβdecay,especiallyallthestagesoftheforbiddentransition,havebeensystematicallystudied,whichenrichesandperfectsthetheoryofβdecay.Researchondoublebetadecay.In1970,WuJianxiongandothersreporteda48Cadoublebetadecayexperimentconductedinasaltminemorethan600metersdeepnearClevelandintheUnitedStates.Theexperimentwasselectedinthedeepminetominimizethebackgroundradiationofcosmicrays.

4.Experimentsonthebasictheoryofquantummechanics

In1935,WuJianxiongpublishedareportbyEinstein,Podolsky,andRosen.ThispaperraisedquestionsaboutthecompletenessofthedescriptionofquantummechanicscreatedbytheCopenhagenSchool,andtheirviewscanbereducedtoaparadox.Duetodifferentviewsontheconceptofmeasurabilityandprobabilityofphysicalquantitiesinquantummechanics,Einsteinalwaysbelievedthatthereshouldbeanideal,definitetheorywithacompletedescriptionofthephysicalessencetoreplacethecurrentmathematicalstructureofquantummechanics.Thisledtotheemergenceofthe"hiddenvariabletheory"later,thatis,thebeliefthatthe"probability"inquantummechanicsistheresultofsomekindofaveragingofsomecurrentlyunknown"hiddenvariables".Therefore,fordecades,somephysicistshavetriedtofindthese"hiddenvariables"toestablishanewandcompletequantummechanics,buttheyhavenotsucceeded.Otherphysicistsdenytheexistenceofthese"hiddenvariables".Infact,ithasbeenprovedthatundercertainconditionsofHilbert,thecurrentmathematicalstructureofquantummechanicsdoesnotallowfortheexistenceofhiddenvariables.

WuJianxiongandotherspublishedanarticleon"AngularCorrelationofScatteredAnnihilationRadiation"asearlyas1950.Experimentsshowthatthepositiveandnegativeelectronswithzeroangularmomentumpairthetwolightquantaemittedafterannihilation.AspredictedbyDirac'stheory,theywillbepolarizedatrightanglestoeachother,whichalsoprovesthattheparityofpositronsandnegativeelectronsisopposite,indicatingthatthereisnocontradictionwithcurrentquantummechanics.In1975,WuJianxiongandotherspublishedanarticletitled"AngularCorrelationandLatentVariablesofAnnihilationPhotonbyPutonScattering",reportingthattheymeasuredtheComptonScatteringinawiderangeofscatteringangles.Theresultoftheangulardistributionofphotonsisconsistentwiththestandardquantummechanicscalculationsbasedontheassumptionthatelectronsandpositronshaveoppositecosmicpresumptions.In1964,JSBell(Bell)restrictedtherangeofangulardistributionthatcanbepredictedbyanylocallatentvariabletheory,andtheangulardistributionobservedbyWuJianxiongetal.assumesthattheusualquantummechanicsComptonscatteringformulaisUnderthecorrectpremise,itdoesnotmeetBell'srestriction,sothelocallatentvariabletheoryisagaindenied,whichsupportstheorthodoxlawofquantummechanicstoahigherdegree.
