SoutheastUniversityoriginatedinSanjiang,whichwasfoundedin1902Normalschool,underneaththeschoolistheDepartmentofPhysicsandChemistry(hereinafterreferredtoastheDepartmentofPhysics,ChemistryandMathematics),theDepartmentofAgricultureandNaturalSciences(hereinafterreferredtoastheDepartmentofNaturalSciencesandAgriculture),theDepartmentofHistory,Geography,andHandDrawing.

InMay1906,ZhouFuyi,governorofLiangjiang,"Sanjiang"wasnamed"TwoRivers",andwasnamed"LiangjiangSuperiorNormalSchool"inaccordancewiththeregulationsof"ZoudingSchoolRegulations".

In1912,LiangjiangExcellentNormalSchoolwasofficiallyclosed.

DuringtheRepublicofChina

InAugust1914,thegovernorofJiangsuProvince(thatis,thegovernor)SouthKoreaJunappointedtheformerSecretaryofEducationofJiangsuProvinceChangjiangQianastheprincipalofNanjingHigherNormalSchool.TheoriginalsiteofLiangjiangNormalSchoolwasplannedtobebuilt.Intheautumnof1916,inviewofChina'sbackwardproductivityandpoverty,thecountryurgentlyneededtodevelopindustry;andbecauseoftheoutbreakoftheFirstWorldWar,imperialismhadnotimetolookaround,whichbroughtopportunitiesforthedevelopmentofChina'snationalindustrybecauseoftheurgentneedforindustrialtalents.Sotheindustrialspecializationcoursewasestablished.Atthebeginning,theengineeringeducationwasbroad,andthengraduallyfocusedonmechanicalmanufacturingandcraftsmanship.

InApril1920,GuoBingwenproposedtheestablishmentofanationaluniversityonthebasisofNanjingHigherNormalUniversityattheschoolaffairsmeeting,andthemembersofthemeetingunanimouslyagreed.

OnJuly13,1921,theMinistryofEducationapprovedthe"OutlineofOrganizationofSoutheastUniversity."TheNationalSoutheastUniversityhas6disciplines,includingengineering,andthemechanicalengineeringdepartmentundertheengineeringatthebeginning.InMarch1923,MaoYisheng,directoroftheengineeringdepartment,togetherwithsevenprofessorsincludingLiShiqiongfromtheengineeringdepartment,proposedtotheschoolcouncilandprofessorsaproposaltoaddthedepartmentofcivilengineeringandelectricalengineering.Theproposalpassedthedeliberationoftheschoolcouncilandtheprofessors..

Intheautumnof1924,engineeringwasseparatedfromSoutheastUniversityandformedwithHohaiEngineeringCollegetoformtheNationalHohaiEngineeringUniversity.

InJuly1927,theEducationAdministrationCommitteeissuedanorderthattheformerNationalSoutheastUniversity,HohaiEngineeringUniversity,JiangsuUniversityofLawandPoliticalScience,JiangsuMedicalUniversity,ShanghaiUniversityofCommerce,NanjingTechnicalCollege,SuzhouIndustrialTechnicalCollege,andShanghai9publicschoolsabovethejuniorcollegelevelinJiangsu,includingtheCommercialCollegeandNanjingAgriculturalSchool,mergedtoformtheFourthNationalSunYat-senUniversity.TheFourthNationalSunYat-senUniversityhas9colleges,partofwhichistheformersiteofNanjingInstituteofTechnology,FuchengBridge,Nanjing,andtheotherpartandmostoftheothercollegesareintheformersiteofNationalSoutheastUniversity,NanjingSipailou.Atthistime,theCollegeofEngineeringconsistsof7departments,includingMechanicalEngineering,ElectricalEngineering,CivilEngineering,Construction,MiningandMetallurgicalEngineering,ChemicalEngineering,andDyeingandWeaving.

OnFebruary29,1928,theFourthSunYat-senUniversitywasrenamedJiangsuUniversitybyanorder.ThenamechangeofJiangsuUniversitycausedawaveofschoolnames.OnApril24,theUniversityCommitteerenamed"JiangsuUniversity"as"NationalCentralUniversity"inaccordancewiththeNo.337OrderoftheGraduateSchool.IntheearlydaysoftheestablishmentoftheNationalCentralUniversity,theCollegeofEngineering,liketheFourthNationalSunYat-SenUniversity,stillhad7departments.Later,theMiningandMetallurgicalEngineeringDepartmentandtheDyeingandWeavingDepartmentwereclosed.

InSeptember1933,theChemicalEngineeringGroupwasreorganizedintheCollegeofEngineering,whichwaslaterchangedtoadepartment.

InNovember1934,aspecialseminaronmachinerywasorganized.

InAugust1938,itdevelopedintotheDepartmentofAeronauticalEngineering,whichcreatedChina'saeronauticalengineeringeducation.

In1937,theDepartmentofWaterConservancyEngineeringwasadded.

DuringtheWarofResistanceAgainstJapan,theNationalCentralUniversityCollegeofEngineering,whichtookrefugeinSichuan,hadsevendepartmentsincludingcivilengineering,mechanicalengineering,electricalengineering,architecture,chemicalengineering,aviation,andwaterconservancy.

InApril1943,theExecutiveYuanoftheWangPuppetGovernmentapprovedtheestablishmentoftheCentralUniversityinNanjingandrestoredtheCentralUniversity.Atthebeginningoftheestablishmentoftheschool,thetwocollegesofscienceandengineeringwereestablished,buttheyweresoonmergedintothecollegeofscienceandengineering,withthedepartmentsofcivilengineering,chemicalengineering,mathematics,andmechanicalengineering.AfterthevictoryoftheAnti-JapaneseWar,NationalCentralUniversitypreparedtodemobilizeNanjing.

InNovember1946,theNationalCentralUniversityresumedclassesatSipailouinNanjing;theCollegeofEngineeringstillhas7departments.

InJanuary1949,thefailureoftheNanjingNationalGovernmentwasaforegoneconclusion.ThePresidentoftheChineseUniversityZhouHongjingwasorderedtomovetotheschool.However,thefacultyandstaffatZhongdaUniversitygenerallylostconfidenceintheKMT,andmostprofessorsdecidedtostayinNanjing.AfterZhouHongjinglefttheschool,undertheauspicesoftheundergroundorganizationoftheCommunistParty,CUHKsuccessivelyformedacontingencycommitteeandatemporaryschoolaffairscommitteetomaintainschoolaffairsandprotectschoolproperties,preparingtowelcometheChinesePeople'sLiberationArmyintothecity.

OnApril1,1949,astudentdemonstrationagainsttheKuomintanggovernmentbrokeoutinNanjing,whichwassuppressedbythemilitaryandpolice.TwostudentsfromtheChineseUniversitywerekilled.OnApril23,thePeople'sLiberationArmymarchedintoNanjing.TheMilitaryManagementCommitteesentZhaoZhuotoCUHKtotakeoverandannouncedthatLiangXiwouldtakechargeofschoolaffairs.OnAugust8,CUHKreceivedanoticefromtheMinistryofEducationofEastChinaandchangeditsnametoNationalNanjingUniversity(fromOctober1950totheword"National"),withPanShuasitspresident.

In1950,theCivilEngineeringDepartmentandArtDepartmentofAnhuiUniversityweremergedintoNanjingUniversity.

Duringthisperiod,theteachingscaleofallcollegesintheschoolwasmaintained,andonlytheSchoolofEngineeringstillhadcertaindevelopment.

In1949,QianZhonghanwasappointedasthedeanoftheCollegeofEngineering,andtherewerestill47professorsandassociateprofessorsin7departments.Therewere2,363studentsintheschoolin1949,including634intheSchoolofEngineering.In1951,therewere2,545undergraduatesintheschool,including976intheSchoolofEngineering,accountingfor38%oftheschool.Itwasthelargestcollegeatthetime.

In1952,alarge-scaleuniversitydepartmentadjustmentwiththemainpurposeof"cultivatingindustrialconstructiontalentsandteachers"began.InNanjing,theDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering,DepartmentofCivilEngineering,DepartmentofChemicalEngineering,DepartmentofConstructionEngineering,DepartmentofElectricalEngineering,andDepartmentofAgriculturalEngineering(OneistheDepartmentofAgriculturalChemistry,theotheristheDepartmentofFoodIndustry)oftheformerSchoolofEngineeringofNanjingUniversityBasedonthe6departments,itwasmergedintotheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringandDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringofJinlingUniversity,aswellastheDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering,DepartmentofElectricalEngineering,andDepartmentofFoodIndustry,theprivateJiangnanUniversity,toestablishamultidisciplinaryuniversityoftechnology,namedNanjingInstituteofTechnology.

From1952to1953,theDepartmentofAgrochemistryofZhejiangUniversity'sAgriculturalCollegewasmergedintotheDepartmentofFoodIndustryofNanjingInstituteofTechnology,andtheTelecommunicationsGroupoftheDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringoftheCollegeofEngineeringwasmergedintoNanjingInstituteofTechnology;DepartmentofHorticultureandAgrochemistryofWuhanUniversityDepartmentsandrelatedmajorsofFudanUniversityparticipatedintheestablishmentoftheFoodIndustryDepartmentofNanjingInstituteofTechnology(nowJiangnanUniversity);theDepartmentofElectricalEngineeringandMechanicalEngineeringofXiamenUniversity’sEngineeringCollegewasmergedintoNanjingInstituteofTechnology.

Attheendof1952,NanjingInstituteofTechnologysetup7departmentsincludingArchitecture,MechanicalEngineering,ElectricalEngineering,TelecommunicationEngineering,CivilEngineering,ChemicalEngineering,FoodIndustryandBasicCourseTeachingandResearchGroups.Thereare265facultymembers,1,948students,and87professorsandassociateprofessorswith265undergraduatesand10juniorcolleges.ShiisthelargestinstitutionofhigherlearninginNanjing.Takingintoaccounttheneedsofthecountry'sindustrialconstructionandthedevelopmentoftheInstituteofEngineering,thejointmeetingofNanjingUniversityandJinlingUniversitydecidedtomaketheheadquartersoftheformerNanjingUniversitySipailouasthesiteoftheNanjingInstituteofTechnology.Aftertheadjustmentoffacultiesanddepartments,NanjingInstituteofTechnologybegantorecruitgraduatestudents.Atotalof117graduatestudentswererecruitedfromthelate1950stotheearly1960s.

In1954,theDepartmentofTelecommunicationswasrenamedtheDepartmentofRadio,andtheDepartmentofElectricitymergedwiththeDepartmentofMechanicalEngineering,andtheDepartmentofThermalPowerPlantswasrenamedastheDepartmentofPower.

In1956,theDepartmentofMechanics,ElectricalEngineering,andShipbuildingDepartmentoftheSchoolofEngineeringofTongjiUniversitysupportedNanjingInstituteofTechnology.

In1957,theDepartmentofMachinerywasexpandedintotheFirstDepartmentofMachinery(DepartmentofMechanicalEngineering)andtheSecondDepartmentofMachinery(DepartmentofAgriculturalMachineryEngineering).

About1958,theteachingandresearchgroupsofmathematics,physics,chemistry,mechanics,andphysicaleducationwereusedasbasiccourses.In1961,itwasrenamedtheDepartmentofBasicSciences.

From1956to1960,NanjingInstituteofTechnologyspunoffmultipledepartmentsandestablishedorparticipatedintheconstructionof4highereducationinstitutions.In1955,theCentralMinistryofHigherEducationdecidedtomovetheDepartmentofRadioEngineeringtoChengduwestward,andjointlyestablishedtheChengduInstituteofTelecommunicationsEngineering(nowtheUniversityofElectronicScienceandTechnologyofChina)withJiaotongUniversityandtheDepartmentofRelationsofSouthChinaInstituteofTechnology.

ThroughtheeffortsofDeanChenZhang,DeanWangHaisu,andtheJiangsuProvincialPartyCommittee,PremierZhouEnlaidecidedin1956thattheDepartmentofRadioDepartmentmobilized19keyteacherstoparticipateintheconstructionofthepowerstation,andtherestweresuspended.Aboutone-thirdoftheteachersandequipmentintheRadioEngineeringDepartmentofNanjingInstituteofTechnologyweretransferredtoChengdu.

In1958,theDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringestablishedtheNanjingInstituteofChemicalTechnology(nowthemainbodyofNanjingUniversityofTechnology).Inthesameyear,theDepartmentofFoodIndustrymovedtoWuxiandtheWuxiInstituteofLightIndustry(nowthemainbodyofJiangnanUniversity)wasestablished.

In1960,NanjingInstituteofTechnologywasidentifiedasanationalkeyuniversity.Inthesameyear,NanjingAgriculturalMachineryCollegewasestablishedonthebasisoftheSecondDepartmentofMachinery.Thefollowingyear,itmovedtoZhenjiangandwasrenamedZhenjiangAgriculturalMachineryCollege(nowthemainbodyofJiangsuUniversity).

In1978,NanjingInstituteofTechnologyresumedenrollmentofgraduatestudents.

Aftertheimplementationofthedegreeregulationsin1981,thefirstbatchofbachelor's,master's,anddoctoraldegreesweregranted.

InApril1986,itwasapprovedbytheStateCounciltoestablishapilotgraduateschool.

InMay1988,NanjingInstituteofTechnologywasrenamedSoutheastUniversityandbegantotransformfromauniversityofengineeringtoacomprehensiveuniversitydominatedbyscienceandengineering.InDecemberofthesameyear,thePukoucampusofDongdalaidthefoundationstoneandwasputintouseinSeptember1990.

In1991,Dongda,asareformpilotoftheStateEducationCommission,tooktheleadinreformingtheinternalmanagementsystemamongcollegesanduniversitiesacrossthecountry.

In1993,Dongdawasthefirstuniversityinthecountrytoreformitsenrollmentandscholarshipsystem.

In1999,itwasselectedasthefirstbatchofnationalcollegestudents'culturalqualityeducationbases.

InMarch1996,withtheapprovaloftheStateEducationCommission,theGraduateSchoolwasformallyestablished.InDecember,SoutheastUniversitywasselectedasthefirstbatchof"211Project"keyconstructionuniversities.

AsofApril2020,SoutheastUniversityhascooperatedwithMassachusettsInstituteofTechnology,UniversityofCalifornia,Berkeley,UniversityofBritishColumbia,Canada,UniversityofCambridge,ImperialCollege,TheSwissFederalInstituteofTechnologyZurich,theRoyalInstituteofTechnologyofSweden,theTechnicalUniversityofMunichinGermany,theUniversityofLeuveninBelgium,theMonashUniversityinAustralia,theTokyoInstituteofTechnologyinJapanandmanyotherworld-classuniversitiesandhigh-levelresearchinstitutionshaveestablishedcooperativeexchanges.

In2017,SoutheastUniversityinitiatedtheestablishmentofthe"Sino-BritishUniversityEngineeringEducationandResearchAlliance",whichisthefirstuniversityalliancefeaturingengineeringeducationandresearchestablishedbyChinaandtheUK.BelfastNineBritishuniversitiesincludingQueen'sUniversity,UniversityofBirmingham,UniversityofCambridge,CardiffUniversity,UniversityofLeeds,UniversityofLiverpool,UniversityCollegeLondon,UniversityofNottinghamandUniversityofWarwickhavejoinedthealliance.

TheschoolalsocooperatedwithMonashUniversityinAustraliatoestablishtheSoutheastUniversity-MonashUniversitySuzhouJointGraduateSchool,whichisthefirstSino-foreignjointgraduateschoolapprovedbytheMinistryofEducation;cooperatedwithRennesUniversityinFranceEstablishedSoutheastUniversity-RennesFirstGraduateSchool.

1.TheschoollogoofSoutheastUniversitywasdesignedandcompletedinMay1997byProfessorZhangDaoyifromtheArtDepartmentofSoutheastUniversity.

2.Theoverallpatternoftheschoolstandardiscircularandconsistsoftwoconcentriccircles.Theouterringlinesaredecoratedwith"CivilMartialLines"thatarethickerandthinnerontheoutside,reflectingChinesetraditionalculture.TheupperpartoftheouterringistheEnglishnameofSoutheastUniversity"SOUTHEASTUNIVERSITY",andthelowerpartisthecollectionofWangXizhi'scalligraphyandsportsschoolmotto"Stopwiththebest."

3.ThecentralbodyofthelogocontinuestheinvertedtriangleshapeoftheschoolemblemoftheCentralUniversityperiod.InsidetheinvertedtriangleistheauditoriumontheSipailoucampus,alandmarkbuildingofSoutheastUniversity.Thethinlineistheoutlineoftheauditorium,andthesolidblacklineinthemiddleistheIoniancolumnandmountainflowercompositionofthefacadeoftheauditorium.Thelowercorneroftheinnerisoscelestrianglebreaksthroughtheinnercircle,meaning"obeyingtherulesanddaretoinnovate".ThetriangleintheinnercircleandthecircleintheoutercirclerepresentthehistoryandrealityofSoutheastUniversity,theoldselfandthenewself,respectively.Thecooperationofthetwonotonlyembodiesthemutualinfiltrationandintegrationofoppositesinform,butalsohighlightsthetensionbetweenhistoryandreality,theoldselfandthenewself,andheraldstheinfinitelybeautifulandgloriousfutureofSoutheastUniversity.

4.Therearethreearcuateareasdividedbytrianglesintheinnercircle.Theschoolname"SoutheastUniversity"ismarkedonthetop,whichisalsoJiWangXizhi'scalligraphystyle;theleftside"1902"onthebottomindicatestheschool'sIthasalonghistoryandcanbetracedbacktotheSanjiangNormalSchoolfoundedbyZhangZhidongandothersin1902;"Nanjing"ontherightbelowindicatestheschool'slocation.

5.Chooseyellowandgreenasthecoloroftheschoolmark.Theouterringandtheauditoriumareyellow,andthebackgroundofthetriangularinnerauditoriumisgreen.YellowisthetraditionalcolorofChina,anditalsoshowsthattheschoolsitewasoncetheseatoftheImperialPalaceInnerGardenoftheSixDynastiesandtheImperialCollege.Thegreensymbolizestheyouthfulvigorandprosperityoftheyoungstudents,representingthattheSixDynastiesPineisstillfullofvitalityafterthousandsofyears,anditalsoshowsthattheschoolislocatedonthebanksoftheYangtzeRiverandXuanwuLake.

TheschoolmottoofSoutheastUniversitypublishes"BookofRites·University".Thebeginningofthisarticlesays:"UniversityThewayisinMingandMingde,inbeingclosetothepeople,andendinginthebestkind.”The“university”herewasfor“primaryschool”atthattime.Thelevelof"art"iscalledsixarts,and"university"isthestudyofself-cultivation,whichmakespeoplebecomemorallyperfect,andbelongstothelevelof"Tao".Taoandart,oneismetaphysical,body,andsex,andtheotherismetaphysical,foruse,andforphase.ItisalsoappropriateforZhuXitoreferto"university"as"adults'studies"("FourBooksCollection·UniversityChapters"),and"adults"refertopeoplewithperfectmorals.
