Translator's Postscript

Postscript

During the translation of this book, my soul is always immersed in the joy of gratitude.

First of all, thank Nanjing Normal University. In September 2008, I received a grant to go to the United States to conduct research as a visiting scholar. I would also like to thank Dr. Stephen McDowell, professor and dean of the Department of Communication Studies at Florida State University (FSU), for his warm invitation for making my trip to the United States a reality.

Summer in Tallahassee is long. One day, in the FSU library, I saw Diana Sellau's (Public Speaking: Paths and Methods", and I turned a few pages at my fingertips, and I was actually deeply attracted by it. For me, public speaking is An unfamiliar vocabulary, this is also a new book that I have never touched before. Later, I learned that in the current American university education, public speaking is a general education course, regardless of subject. The elective course is wide-covered, and it’s a good match for the series of political classes that Chinese college students must choose.

So, I took the book back and read it carefully. The more and deeper I read, the more I feel This book is of great value. It is neither a purely theoretical extension, although its theory is very cutting-edge; nor is it a stack of simple cases, although its cases are very vivid and extremely copyable—it really can be described as It’s a "perfect combination of theory and practice"!

So, I thought, why not introduce it to Chinese college students?

So, through the Internet, I prepared to translate the The intention of submitting the book to Tsinghua University Press was also by chance. In just 15 days, the editor teacher gave me a positive reply and soon signed the translation contract. ——This also made me feel deeply. Tsinghua University Press’s high efficiency, I sincerely admire the keenness and dedication of the new generation of publishers.

I would like to thank Professor Diana Sellow, who now works in the School of Communication at Kentucky State University. When she learned that I was going to translate her work for Chinese readers, she was very happy and gladly gave me a copy of "Valid Public Speaking" signed by her, and wrote on the title page: "Thank you for your great efforts in my work. Support."

Preface

Since the mid-1990s, journalism and communication education has been "exclusive" from a few universities such as Renmin University and Fudan University. Discipline has quickly become a "regular" discipline in almost all comprehensive universities and even quite a few such as the University of Finance and Economics, Business University, Agricultural University, and normal and art colleges. The two most famous institutions of higher learning in China, Tsinghua University and Peking University have also been established. School of Journalism and Communication. The formation of such a "obvious" situation is that after entering the information age, the social status, role and influence of journalism and communication are not only becoming more and more important, but also more and more realized by people; On the other hand, the rapid development of the media industry in recent years has provided young people with career prospects and imagination. Although compared with the number of journalism and mass communication courses of approximately 140,000 students in the United States, China’s journalism and communication The scale of education is not very large, but as far as China’s national conditions is concerned, the prosperity of this kind of journalism and communication education may seem to be excessive due to a kind of "bubble" drive. However, beyond traditional journalism, it will be broader. Media politics, media public opinion, media culture, media art, media economy, media laws and regulations, and media ethics are incorporated into journalism and communication disciplines. The theory of communication and various quantitative social science research methods are incorporated into the field of journalism and communication. People outside of the spread The inclusion of international communication, organizational communication, and public relations in the field of communication science all proves the shift and expansion of journalism and communications, and it is this shift and expansion that gives journalism and communications education a broader development space and disciplinary charm. .
