In1966,EllisonlefthishometownandcametoBerkeley,California,wherehewaspreparingtostudyforgraduateschoolandatthesametimebegantoworkandearnmoney.Helearnedcomputerprogramming,mainlyforthedevelopmentofIBMlargecomputers.Hedidn'twanttodevotehimselftohigh-tech,butwantedtoearnsomelivingexpenses.Hisjobwastodevelopapplicationsforsomelargecompanies.Atthattime,softwaredevelopmentmeant:attachingtapes,backingupdata,andtheworkwasmonotonousandnotchallenging.

Marriage

MeetinginBerkeleyEllisonmajoringinChinesehistoryAddaQuinn,theygotmarriedsoon.TheUnitedStatesinthe1960swasaneraofturbulenceandgreatchanges,theMiddleEastWar,theVietnamWar....Ellisonkeptchangingjobs.Althoughhedidn'tmakemuchmoney(thecouplehadacombinedmonthlyincomeofUS$1,600),hewasverygenerous.HeevenborrowedUS$3,000tobuya34-footsailboat.Atthesametime,anothersmallsailingboatisbeingpurchasedininstallments.Ellisonisaperfectionist.Heneverbotheredaboutthebills,butQuinnhadenough.Theydivorcedin1974.Ellisonpersuadedher:"Iwillbecomeamillionaire.Ifyouarewithme,youcangetanythingyouwant."ButQuinndidnotregrethischoiceintheend.
