ChinaThepredecessorofCommunicationUniversitywastheBroadcastingandCommunicationTechnicianTrainingCourseoftheCentralBroadcastingBureauestablishedin1954andtheBeijingBroadcastingTechnicalCollegeestablishedin1958.TheCentralBroadcastingCorporationdecidedtoopenthe"CentralBroadcastingCorporationTechnicalPersonnelTrainingCourse"in1954totraintechnicalpersonnelwithprofessionaltheoreticalknowledgeofbroadcasting.
In1958,thefirsttechnicalcollegedirectlyundertheCentralBroadcastingAdministration—BeijingBroadcastingCollegewasformallyestablishedonthebasisoftheoriginaltrainingclass.
OnMarch18,1958,themeetingofdirectorsoftheCentralBroadcastingBureauformallyapprovedthetrainingclasstoexchangerealestatewiththeBeijingForestryBureau,anddecidedtomovethetrainingclassfromthelaunchingstationNo.12inLiangxiangtoNanlishiRoadinthecity.(LatertheNanlishiRoadGuestHouseoftheMinistryofRadio,FilmandTelevision);OnMay22ofthesameyear,theTechnicalCorrespondenceSchoolrunbytheCentralBroadcastingCorporationmovedtotheleadershipofthetrainingclass,injectingnewstrengthintothetrainingclass;September2ofthesameyear,BeijingBroadcastingTechnicalCollege,thefirstcollegedirectlyundertheCentralBroadcastingAdministration,wasformallyestablishedonthebasisoftheformerTechnicalStaffTrainingCourseoftheCentralBroadcastingAdministration;onOctober2ofthesameyear,theBeijingBroadcastingCollegeopenedforcorrection.
OnFebruary13,1959,inawrittenreportfromBeijingBroadcastingCollegetothePartyGroupoftheCentralBroadcastingBureau,NiZhengyiformallyraisedtheissueofestablishingBeijingBroadcastingInstitute;onApril2ofthesameyear,TheMinistryofEducation'sMinistryofEducation(16)No.183approvedtheestablishmentofBeijingBroadcastingInstitute.

OnJune20,1961,thedevelopmentofBeijingBroadcastingInstitutesuffereditsfirstserioussetback.TheCentralBroadcastingCorporationdecidedtostopenrollingstudentsinBeijingBroadcastingInstituteinaccordancewiththeinstructionsofthecentralgovernmentonadjustinghighereducationinstitutions,andwasincludedinthescopeof"investigationandabolition."OnMay24,1963,theStateCouncilissuedthe"NoticeontheRestorationofBeijingBroadcastingInstitute"(GuowenbanziNo.367),agreeingtorestoreBeijingBroadcastingInstitute.
InJune1965,BeijingBroadcastingInstitutedecidedtomakeFuzhuangBeijingPetroleumSchoolthenewcampusofthecollege.
InMay1970,thecollegewasdesignatedasa"blackbase"bytheJiangQingcounter-revolutionarygroup;theCentralBroadcastingAdministration'smilitarymanagementteamonceagainsubmittedthe"ReportontheRequestforInstructionsontheShutdownofBeijingBroadcastingInstitute"tothecentralgovernment.InJulyofthesameyear,ItwasdecidedattheNationalEducationWorkConference:BeijingBroadcastingInstitutetocancelitonatrialbasis.Atthispoint,BeijingBroadcastingInstitutehascompletelyceasedoperations.
In1973,underthekindcareofPremierZhouEnlai,BeijingBroadcastingInstitutewasabletoresumeitsoperation.
In1976,BeijingBroadcastingInstituteandBeijingPeonyTVFactoryjointlyestablished"July21University".In1979,the"July21University"wasrenamedtheWorkersCollege.
In1979,itbegantorecruitgraduatestudents.
InNovember1981,withtheapprovaloftheStateCouncil,theschoolbecamethefirstbatchofmaster'sdegreegrantingunitsinthecountry.
InJanuary1982,itwasapprovedasthefirstbatchofbachelor'sdegree-grantingunits.
InFebruary1984,theStateEducationCommissionissued[84]JiaochengziNo.004,approvingBeijingBroadcastingInstitutetoholdcorrespondenceeducation.
In1998,theschoolbecameadoctoraldegree-grantingunit.
In2001,itofficiallyenteredtheranksofthenational"211Project"keyconstructionuniversities.
In2002,theEastCampusoftheBeijingCampusofChinaUniversityofMiningandTechnology(formerlyBeijingCoalManagementCollege)wasmergedintoBeijingBroadcastingInstituteasawhole.

InAugust2004,BeijingBroadcastingInstitutewasrenamedCommunicationUniversityofChina.In2009,CommunicationUniversityofChinaestablishedthefirstdomesticMBAeducationprogramfeaturingculturalmedia.
In2011,itbecameakeyconstructionuniversityofthe"985ProjectAdvantageDisciplineInnovationPlatform".
InSeptember2017,CommunicationUniversityofChinawasselectedintothelistofthefirstbatchof"DoubleFirstClass"world-classdisciplineconstructionuniversities.
InMarch2018,CommunicationUniversityofChinawasawardedtheMasterofPublicAdministration(MPA)professionaldegreeauthorizationpointbytheAcademicDegreesCommitteeoftheStateCouncil.
OnJuly31,2018,theschoolestablishedastrategicpartnershipwiththeChinaAdvertisersAssociation.OnSeptember16,theschoolsignedastrategiccooperationagreementwithAlibabaGroup.
InSeptember2018,theAcademicDegreesCommitteeoftheStateCouncilandtheMinistryofEducationformallyapprovedtheadmissionofstudentsfortheMasterofPublicAdministration(MPA)ofCommunicationUniversityofChina.
OnJune14,2019,CommunicationUniversityofChinaintegratedtheacademicresourcesandfacultyofmultipledepartmentsandcollegestoformallyestablishtheSchoolofGovernmentandPublicAffairs.
InNovember2019,CommunicationUniversityofChinawasformallyapprovedasasupportingunitfortheconstructionofthe“StateKeyLaboratoryofMediaConvergenceandCommunication”.
